Advanced contemporary portrait lighting Course

Course Content

This London based Black and White photography course uses techniques influenced from traditional film cameras. Analogue black and white methods are easily transferrable to digital and you will be learn to look for effective use of lighting and tones to create great compositions for your images.

We will meet near the Apple Store, Covent Garden in the morning and investigate this interesting tourist area for creative images of people and performers. After this session will catch the tube to St Paul's for more street photography and architecture look at shape and form. We will learn how different ND and colour filters can enhance certain elements of your monochromes. This will be perfect timing for lunch  In the Afternoon we will photograph on the colourful South Bank exploring the brutalist architecture 1950s and 1960s as backgrounds for our models. These linear structures are excellent for posing people in and against using both flash and ambient light. the colourful and interesting compositions and people. For the last session we will get the tube to Regent’s Park using all the skills for the last portrait session.

Photographing in the beautiful Gothic Style Victorian mansion Ashridge House with its fantastic gardens, walls and amazing interiors.   The morning session we will be based in the grounds and wall gardens using both wireless flashes (Hi-Speed Sync) and the weaker ambient light creating contemporary photographs.

After lunch the first of the afternoon sessions uses available light both colour and black & white, then the second session with Elinchrom studio flashes. The lights will be set up and you will have a chance to practise under tuition your own ideas in the ornate rooms of the main house.

Aim of the course

For advanced photographers who want to build their skills and experience in lighting and portraiture to a professional standard, adding to their portfolio.

Preparation

Good camera and flash skills, look at fashion magazines and catalogues for inspiration.
