Understanding Photography Course
The theory and creativity of photography
This is a fascinating workshop is aimed at photographers who want to learn how to read and create photographs like the professionals. Why researching and understanding established photographers improves your photography. You will discover the importance of composition, narratives, and the understanding about the viewer.
Why is a photograph perceived as a good photograph?
The definition of a good photograph is subjective and can be interpreted differently by more than one person - especially amongst photographers. We will look at the construction of photographs and discuss the important elements of the images and why creating a photograph is not just as simple as having a good camera and pressing a button.
We start the day with a brief history of photography and the changing styles over the centuries, looking at the Dada and Surrealist influence, street photography and the ‘Society of the Spectacle’.
Before lunch you will show the group an image of choice in a crit to receive constructive feedback and this is also a really good opportunity to listen to their interpretation of your photographic narrative.
After lunch we will study the work of photographers such as Man Ray, Henri-Cartier Bresson, Elliot Erwitt, David Bailey, Diane Arbus, Cindy Sherman, Jeff Wall, Gregory Crewdson, Martin Parr. During the last session you will create your own 'constructed image' at the studio which will then be reviewed by the group, so bring your camera.
