Understanding Photography Course
Learn and be inspired by photographers
''This workshop is aimed at photographers who want to get more from their photography. We will look at photographic narratives and image construction.’
Photographic imagery is subjective and a photograph can be interpreted differently
by more than one person. We will look at the construction of photographs and discuss as a group their meanings.
We start the day with a brief history of photography and the changing styles over the centuries. Learning to be observant and studying interactions between the living and the inanimate objects can will help you to produce interesting images.
At this point we will discuss the ‘Spectacle’ and how human beings are drawn to it.
Just before lunch you will show the group your image to receive constructive feedback and also to listen to their interpretation of your photographic narrative.
After lunch we will study the work of photographers such as Man Ray, Bresson, Erwitt, Bailey, Arbus, Sherman, Wall, Crewdson, Parr, and Olaf. By discussing the meaning of these images and looking at how they are constructed will help you when producing your own photographic narratives. During the last session you will create your own 'constructed image' at the studio which will then be reviewed by the group.
