MelenCourses
Photography and Video Courses

PHIL RICHARDSON

MelenCourses started in 2005 with the aim of teaching photographers the basics of photography and using the light effectively, so that they would be able to take good photographs after the tuiton.   Aswell as teaching an A Level photography course, the range of courses we offer has grown to enable you to take the next step and become professional photographers yourselves.

My love of photography started early with my father being a keen amateur photographer, watching him really inspired me as well as teaching me most of the basics. As a child it amazing watching the photos emerge from the murky depths of the developing solution in his dark room.  Although i regard myself as self taught, some aspects of my work take influence from my degree course at the University of Westminster, especially from Andy Golding.

Observational photography fascinates me as a genre, with people being my favourite subject. I love being able to capture a personality in a photograph.  Photographs with a strong narrative really get my attention and this along with good lighting and composition is what i aim to capture.

Those who know me, including my wife, tell me I'm laid back and fun… if a little unorthodox! One of my passions is learning new things, especially in photography and I believe that knowledge is to then be shared. The photography courses at MelenCourses are great fun which something I personally enjoy, getting a lot of satisfaction from helping other photographers improve their hobbies or businesses.

Our name
Melen is the Cornish word for "yellow" which reflects my Cornish ancestry and my love of Kernow.  With my favourite colour being yellow it had to be chosen really!

ALISTAIR PECK - Associate Photographer

Photography has been an increasingly important part of my life since my parents let me use their camera to take my first ever photograph when I was 7 of a stone bridge near Llyn Gwynant in Wales. Soon afterwards they bought me an instamatic camera and some black and white film and I found something that that has fascinated and absorbed me ever since.

As well as having developed my style and my technique over the years in between I have been working with Phil Richardson for two years now, assisting with weddings and corporate work building my experience and knowledge. As well as getting involved in the courses I have my own photographic commissions and projects, including weddings, portrait sessions and working on my photographic art gallery.

The same thing that has always driven me still motivates me now in the world of digital photography, the desire to perfectly capture a moment in time so that it can be shared by everyone.

REBECCA FENNELL - Associate Photographer

Born in Zimbabwe and raised in South Africa, I am a freelance photographer based in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.

Since childhood, I have absolutely loved photography and have definitely found my vocation in life. I’m very much a ‘people person’ and find it really interesting meeting with new people, photographing them and creating images that they love and that I am proud of.

My first profession was as a chef which has led to another speciality of mine photographing food and drink. I still have a huge love of food, the colours and their textures along with portraiture is another area that I find really exciting working in.

Having worked for the past couple of years just as Rebecca Fennell Photography I’m now really excited to be working with YellowMelen and be part of a team of like minded individuals. A team of heads is definitely better than one!
