Learn how to use a flash, set up studio lights and take better portraits.
Improve your portrait photography with better lighting skills and build your portfolio. This course will give you more confidence using flashes both on and off camera as well as set up a portable studio. Learn to control natural light both outdoors and inside with window lighting.
There will be five set-ups on the day using both studio lights and off camera wireless flashes, covering portraiture and groups. You will gain experience helping to put-up the lights, so you can do this yourself with your own equipment.
Photographing with a model learn a few simple lighting set-ups with both black (Lo-Key) and white backgrounds (Hi-Key). A few simple creative lighting techniques can produce different looks with only a few lights, reflectors, snoots or gobos. Lighting with flash for events and parties and location portraiture with off camera flashes. Finishing with natural light portrait photography.
Areas Covered: setting-up a studio with, lights and paper backgrounds, off-camera flash, finding locations, posing.
Photographer Level: An understanding of how to use your camera, setting apertures and shutters speeds.

Full Frame or Cropped, with a lens focal length covering at least 18-135mm. If using a full frame, 35mm and 85mm prime lens are fine, please contact me if you are unsure.
Micro Four Thirds Cameras
Lens focal length covering at least 14-140mm. This can comprise two lenses typically 14-42mm and 45-200mm.
We will provide the model, background, lighting, flashes and wireless connections. For Sony cameras please check hotshoe connection.
If you would like use your own speedlites and light meter please bring those along, there will be an opportunity to practise with them if you wish.

Please make sure your camera is good working order and that you have enough batteries, cards or film. If your equipment fails on the day you can still attend but we can not offer an alternative camera.
Costs are incurred when we run our training courses and for this reason we are unable to offer any refund in the event of your non-attendance on the day of the course you have purchased. This is irrespective of your circumstances or reasons. If we receive notice one month before the date of your course that you unable to attend and we are able to fill your place then we will issue a credit note for an alternative course. If you are unable to attend with six months of the course date we will issue no further credit notes.
We reserve the right to remove, cancel or alter the date of any of our training courses, we will inform you of alternative dates and depending on the circumstances of the cancellation issue a full refund or credit note for a similar course.
If the course is cancelled due to extreme weather conditions we will offer another date for the course or a credit note for a similar course.
All vouchers much be used with in 12 months of the date of purchase. Vouchers can be used to contribute to part or full payment of a course or 1:1 session.
Although every care will be provided by YellowMelen and Philip Richardson, no responsibility will be accepted for any indirect loss or damage caused to your equipment. As the client you will need adequate insurance against the loss or damage of your equipment.
You will need to provide your own food on the training days as MelenTraining does not offer this facility. When we are on location there will be a break for lunch near cafes and restaurants and you are more than welcome to bring your own food.
